Read the instructions, not just the product name
Names alone do not tell you how a product should be used. Carr & Day & Martin separates its Belvoir Step 1 cleaner from its Step 2 conditioner and also sells balm and storage dressing. The products serve different purposes within that maker's range. A bottle described as soap elsewhere may have a different role or formulation.
Make a short shopping list based on your saddle's current instructions. If those instructions name a product, ask the saddle maker before substituting one simply because the packaging looks similar.
Why one routine cannot fit every saddle
Kent & Masters specifically excludes several soap types from its care method. Albion also identifies a formulation change: its balm bought before June 2025 is not compatible with its newer vegetable-tanned saddles. The age and formulation of a bottle can therefore matter alongside the saddle's brand.
A useful buying checklist
- Which material or finish is the product intended for?
- Is the job cleaning, conditioning or preparation for storage?
- Does your saddle maker approve it?
- What quantity and application method does the label specify?
- Are there areas or materials it should not touch?
- Does an older bottle still match the current instructions?
Keep products in their original labelled containers. If the label is missing or unreadable, replace it rather than asking another rider to identify the contents by smell or colour. Store the instructions with your kit so shared users can follow the same routine.
For the whole process, see cleaning a leather saddle. If tack has changed condition during storage, seek advice about the item rather than applying extra oil to disguise the change.
Storage won't fix a saddle that doesn't fit. Have your saddle checked by a qualified saddle fitter (Society of Master Saddlers register), especially after it's been stored for a long time.
Damaged, mouldy or stiff tack can rub or break. Check stitching and leather before every ride, and ask your saddler or vet if your horse shows soreness.
